Seismic characteristics near the epicenter of the 1303 Hongtong M=8 earthquake, Shanxi Province and its implication

In this paper, we calculated the seismic pattern of instrumental recorded small and moderate earthquakes near the epicenter of the 1303 Hongtong M=8 earthquake, Shanxi Province. According to the spatial distribution of small and moderate earthquakes, 6 seismic dense zones are delineated. Temporal distribution of ML≥2 earthquakes since 1970 in each seismic dense zone has been analyzed. Based on temporal distribution characteristics and historical earthquake activity, three types of seismicities are proposed. The relationship between seismic types and crustal medium is analyzed. The mechanism of three types is discussed. Finity of strong earthquake recurrence is proposed. Seismic hazard in mid-long term and diversity of earthquake disaster in Shanxi seismic belt are discussed.

Comparison of seismotectonic peculiarities of Altai Mountains and Mongolian Altai

The paleoseismogeological studies within the two representative segments of fold systems in the Altai mobile belt (Altai Mountains and Mongolian Altai) have been carried out. These studies revealed the primary seismodislocations (seismic ruptures) of both the ancient historic and prehistoric strongest earthquakes. Based on amplitudes of single displacements (reverse fault and normal fault motions were 0.5–1.6 m) and with the significant strike slip component (more than 1.5 m) taken into account, the magnitude of ancient events in the Altai Mountains was determined at approximately 7.5. The recurrence period is 1400 years on average for the M = 7.0 events and 2100 years for the M = 7.5 ones. In the western Mongolian Altai, reverse fault motions were up to 2 m, corresponding to an earthquake magnitude of about 8.0 (an analog with the 1931 Fuyun earthquake). The recurrence period for the strongest earthquakes in Mongolian Altai was longer than that for the Altai Mountains, about 3000 years. This can be explained by higher magnitude values for western Mongolian Altai. It also can be concluded that the seismic regimes of the Altai Mountains and Mongolian Altai remained almost unchanged during the entire Holocene.

Superposition of different stress orientations in the western sector of the northern Apennines (Italy)

Previous studies of the stress regime in the northern Apennines report compression in the outer sector and extension in the inner sector. In this study we focus on the relationships between the two regimes and, by making use of 54 focal mechanism solutions, we try to shed some more light on a tectonic setting that appears more complex than the previous models. The focal mechanisms, computed using the first onset technique, are inverted for stress parameters. The method applied requires subdividing the volume to be investigated into homogeneous sectors: to comply with the complexity of the area under study, we included depth as a parameter for sub-zoning. Our results show that the shallow regime (0–10 km of depth) is transtensive even in the sector previously reported to be compressive. In fact, at a shallow depth, very few thrust focal solutions lie in a spatially limited sector in the eastern part of the area under study. Just below 10 km in depth, the stress regime converts to transpressional: stress axes are approximately inverted. Deeper than 45 km, thrust solutions are found. They are not numerous enough to perform an inversion but indicate the existence of a compressional regime at depth. It is worth noting that a gap of seismicity is observed in the layer 30–45 km.
